Kura II Regional PAG meeting in Azerbaijan

The Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Azerbaijan had hosted the opening session of the Regional Project Advisory Group meeting (PAG) of the UNDP – GEF Kura II project in Baku on January 30, 2018.
The Deputy Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of Azerbaijan Mr. Firdovsi Aliyev had emphasized in his speech delivered on behalf of the main beneficiary in Azerbaijan that the ministry is highly appreciating implementation of the UNDP GEF Kura II project. Mr. Aliyev stressed out that the project is contributing to building capacity of stakeholders involved in water resources management in the country. Kura II is also making valuable efforts to acceleration of process of bilateral cooperation in this field with Georgia.

Delegation of Georgia visiting Azerbaijan consisted of about 15 experts representing stakeholders from another beneficiary country introduced themselves after short gratitude speech given by the head of delegation Mrs. Marina Makarova.  

Representatives of both countries introduced themselves having short comments and feedback related to the project and continued with visiting the National Environmental Monitoring and Hydrometeorology Departments of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of Azerbaijan. The heads of these departments and their staff presented comprehensive information about their experience and daily work to their Georgian colleagues. Then the guests and local PAG members conducted visits to the Central Laboratory of the main water supply company of Azerbaijan “Azersu JSC” and Water History museum of the state company “Amelioration and Water Economy JSC”. PAG members became familiar with these institutions, their history and achievements.  

    The Regional PAG meeting is going on in Gabala city of Azerbaijan at the moment where the PAG members had a chance to visit the wells in Gabala from where the underground water is transported to Baku through the 260 km water pipeline to supply the capital city with fresh drinking water. The participants of regional meeting had a chance to become closely familiar with the source of ground water and how the facility extracting water is functioning.


The Regional PAG meeting was hosted on January 31 and February 1 in Gabala city of Azerbaijan where the PAG members had a chance to visit the wells in Gabala from where the underground water is transported to Baku through the 260 km water pipeline to supply the capital city with fresh drinking water. The participants of regional meeting had a chance to become closely familiar with the source of ground water and how the facility extracting water is functioning.

The two days meeting in Gabala served for the Kura II Project Advisory Group members as a venue to discuss the further steps in line with the project work plan as well as discuss different issues in non - formal and friendly environment. The overwhelming and data rich presentations were presented by the specialists of both countries to each other and open discussions on the history of cooperation as well as opportunities for young generations of water managers for the future had been conducted during the intensive 2 days in Gabala.
